In his current role, Mr. Atkinson develops and oversees lifecycle policies and programs as they relate to the overall management of general and flag officers. His expertise also makes him the advisor to the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness on these matters.
Mr. Atkinson served 23 years in the Army, beginning as an infantry officer in 1981. In his military career, he served in troop assignments with the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and as a staff officer in the Pentagon in the Army’s Artificial Intelligence Center as well as the Army’s General Officer Management Office. His service earned him the Legion of Merit, Expert Infantryman Badge, the Ranger Tab, as well as the Parachutist, Pathfinder and Army Staff Identification badges.
Following his retirement from the Army, Mr. Atkinson served as the deputy chief of the General Officer Management Office within the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army. In 2011, he became the deputy director for the Corporate Senior Executive Management Office in the Department of Veterans Affairs before assuming his new service role in 2014.
Mr. Atkinson earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering, with a specialty in robotics, from Rice University. Prior to entering the Army as an officer, he earned his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.
