Mr. Jules (Jay) W. Hurst - Performing the Duties of Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness

The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Readiness (ASD(R)) serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense and the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness on all matters related to the readiness of the Total Force. The ASD(R) develops policies and plans, provides advice, and makes recommendations for readiness programs, reporting, and assessments to execute the National Defense Strategy.

Force Readiness oversees the preparedness of the Joint Force to meet mission requirements in line with national strategy.

Force Education and Training

Force Education and Training oversees the development of policies and plans for military training and education.

Force Safety and Occupational Health

Force Safety and Occupational Health (FSOH) oversees the Department’s strategic direction for force safety and occupational health risk mitigation, including program oversight, policy development, and trend analysis.
