As the Director for the Transition to Veterans Program Office (TVPO), Ms. Tamre Newton leads a team committed to assisting Service members prepare for transition from active duty to civilian life. Ms. Newton’s 29 years of federal service have equipped her with the knowledge and skills to collaborate with Interagency partners in moving the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) in a cultural transformation; embedding preparation for the military to civilian transition across the Military Life Cycle.
In her role as Director, Ms. Newton ensures transition assistance is a collaborative and coordinated interagency effort which meets the needs of our Service members. She strategically collaborates with leaders from the Departments of Defense (DoD), Labor, Veterans Affairs, Education, Homeland Security, U.S. Office of Personnel Management, U.S. Small Business Administration and the Military Services. Prior to joining the DoD Family, Ms. Newton was a member of Air Force (AF) Services; her portfolio included Airman & Family Readiness, Mortuary, Casualty, Honor Guard, Protocol, Comprehensive Airman Fitness and Wounded Warrior Program Policy. Her expertise in managing $175M in the funding of Quality of Life programs secured crucial resources during sequestration, ensuring consistency in funding in support of readiness and resiliency.
Ms. Newton began her federal career as a Family Support Program Manager and dedicated ten years to working AF Mental Health and Family Advocacy prevention programs and has experience at the AF MAJCOM and Headquarters levels. Service in the Pacific Command equipped her with an extensive understanding of non-combatant evacuation operations, which benefited Headquarters AF, as Ms. Newton served as a subject matter expert with the AF Readiness Team in support of Operation Tomodachi.
Ms. Newton holds a Master of Arts in Marriage & Family Therapy from East Carolina University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Campbell University. Ms. Newton is a graduate of Air War College and Air Command and Staff College. She has been recognized for her service to include the AF Award for Meritorious Civilian Service, AF Exemplary Civilian Service Medal, AF Family Support Program Manager of the Year and as the Director, led the Osan AB Airman & Family Readiness Center to a Best in the AF selection.
